Village Manager’s Office

To:   Village Council, Staff and Web Page
  From:   Ryan Cotton, Village Manager
   Date:   7/8/04
     Re:    Council Information Letter

Acting Manager: I am up north Friday through Sunday. I am canoeing so cannot bring the cell phone for fear of drowning it. Roger DeYoung will be Acting Village Manager.

Receptionist/Cashier Position: About 30 applications have been received to date. We will be evaluating later this month and interviewing shortly thereafter with a possible appointment in early August. A number of applicants are interested in the possibility of job sharing.

Farmer's Market: The Chamber shared the cost of another sign that we are placing on Exchange Street.  The cost to the Village is $67.  More vendors were there today.  About ten total.

Go Ped Issues: Roger put out a press release this week. It is in your box and I will get a copy to the vendors so they know the laws.

Village Cove and Shared Access: John and I met with representatives of Village Cove this week and learned of some of their concerns about sharing an access with the Marina Bay project.  The developer agreed to see how their concerns could be mitigated and we are meeting again in two weeks.

Planned Development Agreement with Marina Bay: John and Bob are working on pulling this together for final action by the Planning Commission at the end of the month and possible action by Council on August 2nd.  The agreement will cover the TIF fund's cost share of a wider boardwalk with an overall cap.

Tri-Cities Managers Cooperating on Day of Caring Project: We are going to jointly clean and weed the Tri-Cities Connector Path. The day is September 23rd.

Heritage Festival Run Fund Raiser: The organizers, Marta Harris and Lori Rhem, report that the run raised over $6,000.  Thanks in part to Dan, Scott and Lori Spelde for running in it.  Thanks to Roger and the Police Department for making it safe.

Coast Guard Dinner Invitations Go Out: Don't forget to send back your dinner choices.

Lakeshore Center for Independent Living Audit of Barber School: This occurred recently.  We came out pretty good but need to install a sign signifying the van accessible spot and designating the back door as accessible and make the threshold smoother.

Dock Advertisements Net New Rentals:We easily paid for the ad, plus some.

Advertisements for Mill Point Park: We did several promotions with flyers and public service announcements.  Since the lot is not yet full of boats, I will advertise in the paper next week to ensure the word is out.

Cost Effective Council Member E-mail Addresses: Our options are to rig them up like the Village staff but that takes getting into your home computers, having you adjust the settings at home successfully and paying Next IT $20/month; or creating free hotmail addresses and posting them on the web page and elsewhere, but that means you will get a bunch of spam also; or simply posting your existing e-mail address on the web site.  Let me know if you have a preference as to how to go.

GA Richards Requests Transfer of Harbor Steel Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption: Setting a public hearing will be on the next agenda.  There is no net change in taxable value to the Village.

Cosmetology School Open to Drop In Customers:They are now ready to receive customers for their students to learn from.

Dollar Store More Like a Supermarket: They have a little of everything it seems.  For some reason, their business is a little slow, however.

Suggestions on Voter Education: It was recently suggested by a Council member that the Village should discuss hosting a candidate's forum.  What do you think?  Should this be on a work session for discussion? Should we discuss the bike path millage question?
