The Community Services Department includes the Building Department, Planning, the Rental Property program and the Historic Conservation Commission and Wooden Boat Show.

Contact Kristin Keery, Contractual Planner, for information about construction projects and permit information and applications.  The Village has three part time inspectors covering building inspections, Electrical inspection and plumbing and mechanical inspections.

The Community Services Department receives and reviews all applications for Building Permits for compliance with applicable building codes and zoning requirements.

  • A building permit is required for the construction of all new structures, alterations and structural repairs including roof repairs and new siding and windows.  New carpet and floor covering and paint do not require a permit.
  • A permit is also required for the demolition of structures.
  • Other permits and reviews include Sign, Fence and Flood Plain Reviews.
  • Permits are also required for electrical work such as a new electrical service or installation of a dishwasher, plumbing work, and mechanical work such as a new furnace, air conditioning and water heaters.

The above information is only a guideline regarding permits. Residents should contact the department for specific answers.

Kristin is the staff liaison to the Planning Commission.  The Planning Commission reviews site plans, planned unit developments and other development plans.  They also review rezoning requests and develop and recommend changes to the Zoning Ordinance.

The Village Code of Ordinances requires that all residential rental properties in the Village must be registered annually each January.  The annual registration fee is $15.00.  In addition, rental properties are inspected every two years for compliance with the International Property Maintenance Code.  The inspection fee is $25.00.
